BREAKING: Major League Baseball has just announced that the World Series will officially commence on October 24, 2023. This decision eliminates the possibility of an early start, which was previously considered if both League Championship Series concluded swiftly.
The urgency of this announcement stems from last year’s flexibility in scheduling, which was meant to adapt to rapid playoff outcomes. MLB initially planned to move up Game 1 from October 25 to October 22 if the League Championship Series ended by October 19. However, the plan was thwarted when the New York Mets won Game 5 of the NL Championship Series against the Los Angeles Dodgers before ultimately losing in Game 6.
This year, Game 7 of the World Series is expected to be held on November 1, with the potential for games extending into November, similar to past seasons. Notably, the World Series has ended in November in multiple years, including 2022, when it went as late as November 5.
The World Series will start on a Friday, marking the fifth consecutive year for this scheduling choice. Remarkably, prior to 2022, the series had not launched on a Friday since 1915.
In addition to the World Series announcement, MLB has detailed the playoff schedule, including an extra off day between Games 1 and 2 of the NL Division Series. This adjustment allows teams to manage their pitching more effectively, enabling the same pitchers to start Games 1 and 4, and Games 2 and 5 on regular rest days.
The upcoming postseason format will feature 12 teams, maintaining the structure introduced in 2022. The top two teams in each league will secure first-round byes, while the remaining teams will compete in best-of-three series to advance.
The Wild Card Series is scheduled for consecutive dates from September 30 to October 2, with the higher seeds hosting the games. Following this, the Division Series will kick off on October 4, with critical matchups determining which teams will advance to the Championship Series starting on October 12 for the AL and October 13 for the NL.
As anticipation builds for this year’s Fall Classic, fans and teams alike are eager to see how the postseason unfolds. Stay tuned for live updates as the playoff race intensifies!
