Mariners Lock in Naylor with Five-Year Deal in Offseason Kickoff

UPDATE: The Seattle Mariners have officially re-signed first baseman Josh Naylor to a five-year contract, marking the first major move of the 2025-26 MLB offseason. This pivotal signing comes just after the Mariners’ heartbreaking loss in Game 7 of the ALCS, solidifying their commitment to building a competitive roster.

The deal, pending a physical, is a clear indication that the Mariners are prioritizing Naylor as a cornerstone player for their future. After a season filled with ups and downs, the Mariners’ front office made it known that retaining Naylor was paramount, and they have delivered with a lucrative contract.

Naylor, who joined the Mariners mid-season from Arizona, delivered a powerful performance, hitting .299/.341/.490 with nine home runs and 33 RBIs in just 54 games. His contributions earned him a 2.2 WAR, and his overall stats for the 2025 season stood at .295/.353/.462 with 20 home runs across both teams.

Seattle has struggled to find a long-term solution at first base for nearly two decades, making Naylor’s return not just a victory for the franchise, but also for their loyal fans. Historically, the Mariners have faced challenges attracting hitters to the pitcher-friendly T-Mobile Park, but Naylor has showcased his affinity for the venue, hitting .304 there with a slugging percentage of .534 in his career.

As a high-contact hitter, Naylor’s ability to minimize strikeouts is crucial for the Mariners, especially considering their recent struggles with offensive consistency. He posted the 17th-best strikeout rate among qualified hitters in 2025, making him a reliable option in the batting order. His unique playing style combines an impressive walk rate with a penchant for stealing bases—successful on 30 out of 32 attempts, including a perfect 19-for-19 after joining Seattle.

While Naylor may not be labeled a superstar, his consistent performance—recording a career-high 3.1 WAR last season—makes him a valuable asset for a team eyeing the World Series in 2026. Fans and analysts alike are optimistic about this decision, as it provides a stable foundation for the Mariners’ lineup moving forward.

As the offseason progresses, MLB analysts, including ESPN’s David Schoenfield, will continue to evaluate the impact of this signing and other moves across the league. Stay tuned for ongoing updates as the Mariners look to enhance their roster ahead of spring training.

This significant re-signing not only demonstrates the Mariners’ dedication to their ambitions but also highlights the excitement surrounding this offseason. With Naylor back in the fold, Seattle fans can look forward to a promising 2026 season.
