UPDATE: In a critical move for community safety, the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) and Mayor Karen Bass have just announced enhanced security measures aimed at protecting the city’s Jewish communities during the upcoming High Holy Days.
The measures come as Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year, begins at sundown on September 25, 2023. As part of this initiative, increased police patrols will be visible around synagogues, schools, and community centers throughout Los Angeles.
In a joint statement released this weekend, Mayor Bass emphasized the urgency of these preparations, declaring, “Any and all forms of antisemitism are unacceptable in Los Angeles. We are taking action to protect Jewish Angelenos as we head into the High Holy Days.”
LAPD Chief Jim McDonnell echoed this commitment, stating, “Our officers will be visible in neighborhoods, not only to deter crime but also to provide reassurance and partnership.” He confirmed that officers have been briefed on the significance of the High Holy Days, ensuring they are educated on customs and traditions.
This proactive approach aligns with the LAPD’s ongoing efforts to collaborate with Jewish community leaders to enhance safety awareness. “We stand united with our Jewish communities against antisemitism and all forms of hate,” McDonnell added.
With Yom Kippur, the holiest day in Judaism, set for October 1-2, 2023, community leaders and law enforcement are urging individuals to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities.
These heightened measures signal a strong community response to recent tensions and reflect a broader commitment to fostering a safe environment for all Angelenos. As the Jewish community prepares to celebrate these significant religious observances, the LAPD’s presence will serve both as a deterrent to potential threats and a source of support.
