UPDATE: KPMG has officially opened its massive new 450,000 square foot headquarters in Hudson Yards, New York City, on November 5, 2023, marking a significant commitment to in-person work. Designed with direct input from employees, the new office aims to boost collaboration and attract over 5,000 staff back to the office.
The firm’s CEO Tim Walsh emphasized this move as a “strong recommitment” to New York, a city he describes as essential for the firm’s future. “We’ve always been committed to New York,” Walsh stated. “This is certainly a strong recommitment on behalf of KPMG.”
The headquarters, located at Two Manhattan West, incorporates employee preferences, notably the choice of round tables, into its design. This shift comes amid a nationwide push to lure workers back to the office after the pandemic-induced work-from-home era. Currently, 81% of KPMG’s New York-based employees are working in person about two days a week.
Inside the sleek new space, each of the 12 floors reflects different New York neighborhoods, from Upper Manhattan to the Financial District. Notable design features include murals and a perforated steel ceiling reminiscent of classic New York architecture, paying tribute to KPMG’s roots dating back to 1897.
Employee feedback played a pivotal role in the design process, with insights gathered from previous offices shaping the final layout. KPMG also established an ambassador program to guide employees through the transition, ensuring a smooth integration into this modern workspace.
The new headquarters includes collaboration rooms, major meeting areas, and innovative spaces like the “Ignition” lab—dedicated to design thinking and problem-solving workshops. These sessions allow clients to engage directly with KPMG staff in a flexible environment, further enhancing collaboration.
Furthermore, KPMG is embracing technology with the integration of AI tools, with 90% of employees actively engaging with advanced AI systems. Walsh stated that embracing these tools is crucial for the firm’s success in the evolving business landscape.
The office is also designed to foster a community atmosphere among employees. Features like a coffee bar that transforms into a full bar in the evenings and an employee lounge named “The Manhattan” encourage social interaction and networking.
As KPMG embarks on this new chapter, the focus remains on enhancing employee experience and integrating technology into daily operations. The firm’s commitment to a vibrant workplace culture aims to redefine how employees collaborate, innovate, and engage with clients.
Next steps: KPMG will continue monitoring employee satisfaction and attendance through badge swipes and feedback tools, ensuring the new space meets the evolving needs of its workforce.
As the firm looks to the future, this bold move reflects a significant shift in corporate strategy, positioning KPMG as a leader in workplace innovation and employee engagement.
