UPDATE: Millions of Floridians are hitting the road this holiday season as gas prices dip, bringing much-needed relief during the busiest travel period of the year. AAA reports that 6.7 million residents are expected to travel by car between December 20 and January 1, coinciding with the surge in travel ahead of Christmas Day.
Traffic along Florida’s Turnpike in Orange County is currently flowing smoothly, a stark contrast to the congested roads seen earlier in the week. This relief comes after a series of serious accidents, including a tragic incident on I-95 in Brevard County that resulted in a fatality and major disruptions.
Traveler Melanie Campioni described her family’s Christmas Eve journey as “stress-free.” Campioni, who embarked on a five-hour drive from Fort Lauderdale to her parents’ home in Alachua County, noted, “There really hasn’t been any congestion. Usually, we hit a few barriers, but it’s been very clean, very fast.”
Others echoed her sentiments. Elizabeth Abadia, traveling from Broward County to a family farm in North Florida, shared her preference for driving over flying. “Better than being in the airport, definitely. So smooth,” Abadia said, expressing excitement for classic Christmas traditions with her family.
In a significant boost for holiday travelers, AAA reports that the national average gas price has fallen below $3 per gallon for the first time in four years. As of Wednesday, Florida’s average price per gallon stood at $2.81. “We have seen some fluctuations on a weekly basis, but ultimately pump prices are following a downward trend,” stated Mark Jenkins, a spokesperson for AAA.
As travel picks up, Friday is expected to be another busy day, with heavy traffic anticipated as families return home after Christmas. This year’s holiday season is shaping up to be more accessible for many, thanks to lower fuel costs and unexpectedly clear roads.
