BREAKING: Torridge District Council has just approved the addition of four new single-person modular housing units to combat the escalating homelessness crisis in Bideford. This urgent measure comes as the area faces a staggering 66 households currently in temporary accommodation, highlighting the pressing need for more emergency housing solutions.
The decision was made during a planning committee meeting at Sully House, located on the Clovelly Road Industrial Estate. This site is already home to six modular units, which will now be expanded to accommodate even more individuals seeking refuge. Currently, all of the council’s 24 housing units are occupied, with demand far exceeding supply.
Authorities report that the rise in homelessness is fueled by a multitude of factors. Many individuals are relocating to the South West, while government interventions are discouraging private landlords. Additionally, skyrocketing property prices are pushing landlords to sell, further squeezing the rental market. The booming holiday rental market has also shifted many long-term rental properties into short-term listings, exacerbating the crisis.
The financial implications are severe. The council is facing significant financial pressure due to increased reliance on costly bed and breakfast accommodations. By expanding temporary housing options, officials aim to alleviate these financial burdens while providing crucial support to those in need.
In a bid to enhance the living conditions around the new units, the council plans to introduce a grassed area, outdoor seating, and a smoking shelter. Councillor Doug Bushby expressed strong support for the initiative, emphasizing that the location is ideal as it is situated on the outskirts of town, away from the urban center.
Councillor Peter Hames echoed the sentiment, highlighting the need for additional amenities, particularly for children. He stated, “It’s nice accommodation but it’s a bit bleak in what the children can do there.” This call for a more family-friendly environment underscores the human impact of this initiative.
With homelessness rising across the region, Torridge District Council’s swift action is a critical step towards providing immediate relief. The community is urged to support these developments as officials prepare for the new units to be operational soon.
Stay tuned for further updates on this developing story as Torridge continues to address the urgent needs of its residents.
