UPDATE: The 72nd annual Dubuque County Fair concluded today, bringing together families and friends for a final day of celebration and connection. Fairgoers flocked to the grounds, highlighting the event’s vital role in the community, as cleanup efforts commenced alongside festival activities.
As visitors navigated the fairgrounds in Dubuque County, Iowa, Adam Gaul, a 17-year-old from Farley, diligently cleaned barn floors. Pausing in his duties, Gaul shared his perspective on the fair’s lasting appeal: “It’s fun – it’s a great social gathering.” He noted that the event allows attendees to enjoy ice cream, showcase animals, and reconnect with friends.
Meanwhile, Hannah Gobeli, 13, from Monticello, prepared for the open class beef show, struggling to make her heifer, named Alexa, cooperate. “I’m excited and nervous,” she admitted shortly before the event. Her mother, Kris Gobeli, praised her daughter’s dedication, stating, “Hannah has been working hard with Alexa since November, and it’s very rewarding.”
The fair not only celebrated livestock but also showcased local creativity. Inside the air-conditioned Creative Arts building, fair board member Mike Lambert highlighted impressive creations from both adults and youth. “We cover everything from canning to photography, and there is a lot of creativity,” Lambert explained, emphasizing the importance of keeping traditional crafts alive.
The Creative Arts section displayed stunning quilts, paintings, and award-winning food preservation projects. Lambert, who has participated in the fair for over 20 years, expressed his commitment to fostering local talent and encouraging community involvement. “Not many people sew their own clothes anymore, but we’re trying to keep that alive,” he said.
The fair exemplifies the spirit of community, with families coming together to celebrate their hard work and showcase their talents. As the event wraps up, attendees are left with cherished memories and a strong sense of belonging.
Looking ahead, local residents are already anticipating next year’s fair, eager to continue the tradition of bringing the community together. This weekend’s successful gathering is a powerful reminder of the joy and unity that such events foster.
