UPDATE: Burlington County has just marked a significant milestone with the completion of a $3 million renovation of the Raphael Meadow Health Department Building in Westampton. The ceremony, held on October 23, 2023, coincided with the 50th anniversary of the building’s original opening in 1975, reinforcing the county’s commitment to enhancing public health infrastructure.
Burlington County officials, including Congressman Herb Conaway and State Assemblywoman Carol Murphy, highlighted the urgent need for modern health facilities, especially in light of lessons learned from the COVID-19 pandemic. The upgrades are designed to better prepare the county for future health emergencies.
“Good health care services shouldn’t be reserved just for the wealthy,” stated Commissioner Tyler Burrell, emphasizing the importance of accessibility for vulnerable populations. The Health Department’s recent initiatives include administering over 900 flu shots and distributing more than 3,400 COVID test kits last year.
The renovated facility now features expanded clinical space, including five exam rooms, a dedicated vaccine room, and areas for HIV and STD testing. These enhancements will enable the building to serve as a mass vaccination site during health crises, ensuring swift responses to community health needs.
During the rededication, Assemblywoman Andrea Katz remarked on the critical lessons of the pandemic, stating,
“COVID made us realize we needed to think more about community health and invest in it.”
The renovations reflect a proactive approach to improving public health resources in Burlington County.
In addition to the building upgrades, a new Mobile Health van was unveiled, designed to bring health services directly to local communities. This mobile unit will provide general health screenings, immunizations, and outreach services, funded through public health grants.
“This renovation is more than just new walls and spaces,” said Dr. Holly Funkhouser Cucuzzella, the Health Department Director. “It represents our continued commitment to public health, innovation, and community service.” The county aims to ensure that health services are accessible and effective for all residents.
The renovations were completed by the Burlington County Department of Public Works, which utilized skilled union trade workers for cost-effective improvements. The project utilized federal public health funding, demonstrating a strategic investment in the county’s health infrastructure.
As Burlington County celebrates this achievement, the focus remains on fostering a healthier future for all residents, highlighting the importance of accessible healthcare services in the face of ongoing public health challenges.
