URGENT UPDATE: One person remains missing following a devastating fire that engulfed a terraced house on Honestone Street in Bideford on the evening of October 28. In a swift response, five individuals have been arrested in connection with this incident, as emergency services continue their extensive search and investigation.
The fire erupted shortly after 8:15 PM, prompting a massive response from emergency crews. Firefighters battled the blaze throughout the night, with up to 15 fire appliances deployed from across Devon and Somerset. Around 45 residents were evacuated from their homes as smoke billowed across the town, creating a scene of panic and concern.
Residents have rallied together, with the Royal Hotel at East-the-Water generously offering 11 rooms for those displaced. Authorities confirmed that the Torridge District Council is working diligently to secure temporary accommodations for the affected individuals.
In a statement released earlier today, police confirmed that the search for the unaccounted person is ongoing and that next of kin have been informed. “Incidents of this nature are shocking for any community,” stated Detective Chief Inspector Sam Smoothy. “We are working closely with the fire service and local authorities to ensure displaced residents are housed and looked after over the coming days.”
The community remains on edge as investigations continue. Police have established a significant presence in the area, urging anyone with information or relevant footage to contact them immediately. The police have requested the public to reach out using log 748 of 28 October via 101 or their website.
As the situation develops, residents are encouraged to stay informed and report any suspicious activity. The community’s resilience is being tested, but support is evident as Bideford comes together in these challenging times.
