UPDATE: The Beaver Water District in Benton County, Arkansas, has announced a staggering 50% increase in water sales since the winter months, reflecting the urgent need for water conservation as the region faces rapid population growth.
The district serves over 450,000 residents and is launching the “Beaver Believer Program,” aimed at promoting responsible lawn irrigation practices. On a typical summer day, the area uses over 25 million gallons of water solely for lawn irrigation, prompting officials to stress the importance of limiting usage.
Director of Public Affairs Trish Ouei stated, “We’re asking folks to realize that their small impacts really do make a huge difference on the lake.” As Northwest Arkansas continues to experience swift growth, the district is proactively preparing to meet the demands of an expanding population while ensuring sustainable water management.
Ouei emphasized, “We have our plan set. Out of these are what the population projections are, and we’re going to meet that, and we’re going to make sure we’re getting water to everyone.” The district is currently constructing a new clear well and pipeline to enhance its infrastructure in response to this growth.
Residents are encouraged to adopt simple water-saving measures, such as avoiding daily watering of lawns unless necessary. Ouei highlighted the community’s role in conserving water, stating, “We are constantly planning ahead for the future growth of Northwest Arkansas, not just for the people, for the economic growth that comes with that.”
This surge in demand underscores the necessity for immediate action to ensure sustainable water resources as the region expands. The Beaver Water District is committed to keeping pace with the community’s needs while promoting responsible water use.
