Lucid Motors (LCID) has positioned itself against Tesla (TSLA) by leveraging artificial intelligence to assert that its vehicles hold the title of the best luxury electric vehicle (EV). In a recent promotional video, Lucid utilized Elon Musk’s own AI, Grok, alongside other AI models, to confirm that the 2025 Lucid Air stands out as the top contender in the luxury EV market. This move signals a strategic shift as Lucid continues to compete for a share of the growing luxury electric vehicle sector.
Lucid has maintained for years that its primary competition does not lie with Tesla. Despite this assertion, the two brands frequently find themselves compared within the luxury market. Marc Winterhoff, Lucid’s interim CEO, stated that the company is witnessing a notable influx of buyers transitioning from Tesla to Lucid. In an interview published by the Financial Times in late September, Winterhoff revealed that many customers are trading in their Tesla vehicles for the Lucid Air and the new Gravity SUV. He noted, “We have seen an uptick, that’s definitely the case, in Europe and also here in the US. The Model S, nothing has changed in 12 years now.”
As Lucid intensifies its marketing efforts, it highlights the performance and technological advantages of its vehicles. The promotional video featuring AI responses asked, “What’s the best luxury EV?” The consensus among AI models, including Grok and ChatGPT, pointed towards the 2025 Lucid Air as the optimal choice. Grok elaborated, stating, “The 2025 Lucid Air emerges as the overall leader. It excels in efficiency and acceleration, with a serene, high-end cabin.”
The 2025 Lucid Air Pure is touted as the most efficient car globally, boasting an EPA-estimated performance of 5 miles per kilowatt-hour (kWh). Lucid vehicles are also equipped with advanced features, such as a 34-inch Glass Cockpit display, surpassing the 17-inch infotainment screen found in Tesla’s Model S and X. The Model 3 and Model Y come with a 15.4-inch display, while newer models include an additional 8-inch rear display. Furthermore, most Lucid models integrate a 12.5-inch Pilot Panel climate control touchscreen.
Despite Tesla’s first-mover advantage in the electric vehicle industry, competitors like Lucid are narrowing the gap with innovative technology, enhanced features, and improved performance. In a significant achievement, the Lucid Air has overtaken the Tesla Model Y to become the best-selling luxury electric sedan in the United States this year. As production of the Gravity SUV ramps up, Lucid anticipates that this model will contribute significantly to its sales and output in the latter half of 2023.
Having launched the Gravity in Europe last month, Lucid delivered its first units in Canada on October 11, 2023, as part of its strategy to expand beyond the U.S. market. The competition between Lucid and Tesla continues to evolve, raising important questions about the future landscape of luxury electric vehicles.
The ongoing debate among consumers now focuses on whether the Lucid Air indeed represents the best luxury EV option available. As this rivalry intensifies, the implications for both brands may reshape consumer choices in the premium electric vehicle market.
