The College GameDay segment has gained a new level of excitement with the introduction of Pat McAfee’s kicking contest, which challenges students to make a 33-yard field goal for a chance at significant cash prizes. This popular game show-style feature has evolved since its inception, showcasing not only the talent of aspiring kickers but also offering impressive payouts throughout the seasons.
2023: A Modest Start
In its inaugural year, 2023, McAfee offered a total of only $30,000 in prizes. Despite the anticipation, only one contestant succeeded in making the 33-yard kick. That honor went to Greyson Wilhelm, who walked away with the entire amount after overcoming the challenge. According to Front Office Sports, this year laid the foundation for what would become a much more lucrative competition in the following seasons.
2024: A Year of Generosity
The contest saw a dramatic increase in payouts during 2024, with McAfee distributing over $950,000 among successful kickers. Notably, Henry Silver secured the largest share, taking home $800,000, with half of that amount donated to hurricane relief efforts. Several other students also benefited greatly from their successful attempts. One student at a Texas A&M game received $50,000, while another contestant known as Daniel from California pocketed $100,000. Additionally, a Ram truck was awarded to Weston Arthur, further enhancing the excitement of the contest.
2025: A Record-Breaking Start
As the 2025 college football season progresses, the momentum continues to build. By Week 5, McAfee has already handed out an astonishing $850,000 in cash prizes. The season kicked off with Logan Pallo, a sophomore from Oklahoma State University (OSU), winning $250,000 in the opening week. The following week, Jack Daugard matched that energy, claiming $300,000 and pushing the total to $550,000 within just two weeks. Although the subsequent weeks offered McAfee a brief respite, he returned with another $300,000 awarded to former kicker Carson Albright.
With the season still young, the excitement surrounding the contest is palpable, and the payouts are expected to exceed the previous year’s totals. Reports indicate that McAfee has already distributed more than $2 million through these contests while avoiding losses exceeding $5 million. This rapid growth has made the kicking contest one of the most beloved segments of College GameDay, drawing in viewers and participants alike.
Pat McAfee’s dynamic approach and commitment to engaging college students through the thrill of competition have transformed a simple kicking challenge into a celebrated tradition, further solidifying his role as a central figure in college football culture. The ongoing success of the contest not only highlights the excitement of the sport but also underscores the potential for significant rewards for those willing to take a shot at glory.
