ESPN Launches Enhanced Streaming App with Multiview and AI Features

ESPN has officially launched its revamped direct-to-consumer streaming app, providing subscribers access to all 12 linear channels of content previously reserved for pay TV. As of March 15, 2024, users can enjoy a host of upgraded features designed to enhance and personalize their sports-viewing experience.

Adam Smith, Chief Product & Technology Officer for Disney Entertainment & ESPN, highlighted the significance of this launch, stating, “We are really at the cusp of a new era across three dimensions: distribution, access, and experience.” For the first time, fans can access 47,000 live shows, originals, and documentaries directly from ESPN, marking a significant shift in how sports content is delivered.

New Features Elevate Sports Experience

The redesigned app introduces a range of features including multiview streaming, live game statistics, and an AI-powered highlights feed called “SportsCenter for You.” This personalized experience combines ESPN’s extensive digital video library with voiceovers from familiar on-air talent, offering tailored content that resonates with individual fans.

Brian Marshall, Vice President of Sports Products & Strategy at Disney Entertainment & ESPN, emphasized the app’s capabilities: “If [the user] wants scores, schedules, stats, news, and analysis, the ESPN app is best in class.” The integration of fantasy sports and betting through the ESPN BET partnership further positions the app as a comprehensive sports hub.

Among the app’s most anticipated features is the multiview capability, which allows fans to watch multiple events simultaneously. While the personalization options are limited compared to other platforms like Apple TV, users can expect to view two or more games side by side. Nicole Pelaez-Dandrea, Vice President of Audience Engagement for ESPN, noted that this feature will be particularly valuable during major events such as college football games and the upcoming U.S. Open.

Innovative Technology Enhances Interactivity

The app also incorporates a “squeeze-back” feature, enabling users to view live action while accessing stats or replays of key plays. Donny Guy, Vice President of Product Design for ESPN, explained how this functionality allows fans to relive moments and stay engaged with the action, even if they join a game late.

Another standout element is the introduction of a vertical video experience called Verts, designed to deliver a curated feed of news highlights, analysis, and social content. This enhancement aims to establish ESPN as the leading destination for digital sports video. Marshall noted, “Fans can always choose to watch live, jump to the beginning of a game, or use our catch-up-to-live experience.”

The “SportsCenter for You” feature combines AI technology with the voices of ESPN talent to create a unique and personalized highlights experience. Jay Donnell from ESPN’s Software Engineering team described the innovative voice generation process, which requires only a small snippet of a talent’s voice to create a high-quality narration.

As ESPN continues to refine its app, they are focusing on evolving the platform to improve user experience. Guy expressed excitement over future developments, including device synchronization, which will ensure that fans viewing content on multiple devices experience a seamless interaction without delays.

In summary, ESPN’s newly launched app marks a pivotal moment in sports broadcasting, combining advanced technology with personalized content delivery. As the platform evolves, fans can look forward to an increasingly interactive and engaging viewing experience.
