Boston Bruins’ top prospect James Hagens has confirmed his decision to return to Boston College for his sophomore season. In an interview with Scott McLaughlin of Boston’s WEEI 93.7, Hagens expressed his commitment to personal development, stating, “It’s a marathon, not a sprint.” This announcement comes during the Bruins’ 14th annual back-to-school celebration, where Hagens was joined by current Bruins players Mason Lohrei and John Beecher.
Hagens’ return is significant for the collegiate hockey landscape. Last season, he stood out as one of the best freshmen, recording 37 points in 37 games. His impressive performance earned him a unanimous selection to the Hockey East All-Rookie team, an accolade he shared with teammate Teddy Stiga and Boston University rival Cole Hutson. He played a pivotal role with the Eagles, stepping in between wingers Gabe Perreault and Ryan Leonard, both of whom had previously played alongside San Jose Sharks prospect Will Smith.
The Eagles’ top line contributed to 36 percent of the team’s goals during the 2023-24 season, a slight improvement from the 34 percent recorded by Smith, Leonard, and Perreault the previous year. While some questioned Hagens’ scoring potential compared to other draft-eligible talents, his on-ice performance demonstrated his capability. Known for his predictive movement and positioning, Hagens combines finesse with physicality, effectively navigating high-pressure areas on the ice.
As the season progressed, Hagens showed marked improvement in his physical presence and playmaking ability, suggesting he possesses the tools to make significant contributions even when not directly involved in the initial play. His growth has generated excitement among Bruins fans and scouts alike, as he was previously regarded as the top talent for the 2025 NHL Draft.
Hagens’ reputation stems from his commanding performances at the U.S. National Team Development Program (NTDP) during the 2022-23 and 2023-24 seasons. He served as the first-line center and playmaker alongside prolific goal-scorer Cole Eiserman. With a remarkable total of 187 points in 118 games, Hagens ranks as the fifth-highest scorer in NTDP history. His record-setting performances include 21 points in seven games at the World U17 Hockey Challenge in 2023, and 22 points in seven games at the World U18 Championship in 2024.
Looking ahead to the upcoming season, Hagens will join a rejuvenated Boston College lineup. Both Perreault and Leonard have signed NHL entry-level contracts, creating opportunities on the top line. Stiga will occupy one of those spots, bringing established chemistry with Hagens. The other wing position is set to be hotly contested, with transfer forward Ryan Conmy and fellow Bruins draft pick William Moore among the candidates.
The return of Hagens, along with fellow Bruins prospects, promises to offer local fans plenty of reasons to attend games at Conte Forum when the puck drops next season. With his blend of skill, vision, and determination, Hagens is poised to further solidify his status as a rising star in collegiate hockey.
