Boxing Legend Dwight Muhammad Qawi Passes Away at 72

Dwight Muhammad Qawi, a celebrated figure in the world of boxing and a two-weight world champion, has died at the age of 72. His sister, Wanda King, confirmed that Qawi passed away on Friday after a five-year battle with dementia. His remarkable journey from prison to the boxing ring captured the hearts of many.

Born as Dwight Braxton in Baltimore, Qawi’s early life was marked by adversity. He grew up in Camden, New Jersey, and began his boxing career while incarcerated at Rahway State Prison, where he participated in the prison’s boxing program. Following his release in 1978, he turned professional at the age of 25.

In December 1981, Qawi made a significant mark in the boxing world by defeating Matthew Saad Muhammad in the 10th round to win the WBC light heavyweight title. He showcased his prowess again eight months later, stopping Saad in just six rounds during their rematch. Following a setback against Michael Spinks, Qawi, known as “The Camden Buzzsaw,” shifted to the cruiserweight division. In July 1985, he clinched the WBA cruiserweight title by defeating Piet Crous.

Qawi’s title reign was challenging, as he faced formidable opponents. Notably, he lost the cruiserweight title to future heavyweight champion Evander Holyfield in a grueling 15-round match in July 1986. He then ventured into the heavyweight division, where he faced legends such as George Foreman, who stopped him in seven rounds.

Qawi retired from boxing in 1998 with an impressive record of 41 wins, 11 losses, and one draw, including 25 knockouts. His contributions to the sport were recognized in 2004 when he was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame.

After retiring, Qawi dedicated himself to mentoring the next generation. He worked as a boxing trainer and also served as a youth advocate and counselor for those struggling with drug and alcohol issues. His legacy extends beyond the ring, as he influenced many young lives through his work.

Qawi’s life story is a testament to resilience and transformation. From a troubled youth to a boxing champion, he inspired countless individuals to overcome their circumstances. His passing marks the end of an era in boxing, but his impact will endure in the hearts of fans and the fighters he inspired.
