Tacoma City Council Invites Young Leaders for Human Rights Commission

The Tacoma City Council is actively seeking new members for its Human Rights Commission, announcing four available positions, including three general member roles and one Emerging Leader position specifically for individuals aged 16 to 24. This initiative aims to amplify diverse voices from various community sectors, including students, labor organizations, and the housing industry.

The Tacoma Human Rights Commission plays a crucial role in addressing significant community issues related to discrimination. Its responsibilities include studying, mediating, and investigating matters that arise from various forms of inequity, including but not limited to race, gender, disability, and military status. The commission’s work seeks to highlight and resolve societal disparities, ensuring that all individuals receive fair treatment and recognition.

To foster an inclusive environment, the city encourages applications from BIPOC individuals, members of the LGBTQ+ community, and people from diverse backgrounds. The council emphasizes that the appointed members will not only contribute to Tacoma’s efforts towards equity and anti-racism but will also participate in essential training programs.

Training and Application Process

Newly appointed commission members are required to complete training on the Open Public Meetings Act and Public Records Act within a 90-day period. These training programs are facilitated by the Washington State Office of the Attorney General, ensuring that all members are well-equipped to perform their duties effectively.

Interested candidates must submit their applications to the City Clerk’s Office by midday on December 1. The application process is designed to be straightforward. For further information or guidance, applicants can contact Elizabeth Wing in the City Clerk’s Office via email at [email protected] or by calling (253) 591-5178.

Provisions are in place for those requiring assistance in alternate formats or needing to submit additional documentation, ensuring that the application process remains accessible to all. The Tacoma City Council’s recruitment drive reflects its commitment to fostering a representative and engaged community dedicated to advancing human rights.
