Beloved Lowell Political Figure George W. O’Hare Passes Away at 87

George W. O’Hare, Jr., a prominent political figure and cherished member of the Lowell community, passed away peacefully on November 26, 2025, at the age of 87. Surrounded by his youngest daughter, George’s death followed a prolonged illness that he faced with remarkable resilience. His lifelong commitment to his community and his family left an indelible mark on those who knew him.

Born in Lowell to Marion R. (McFadden) and George W. O’Hare, George remained deeply connected to his roots. He began his education at Notre Dame Academy before graduating from Sacred Heart Elementary in 1952. His early years were characterized by active participation in the Boy Scouts and serving as an altar boy. George continued his education at Keith Academy High School, where he graduated in 1956, excelling in sports and leadership roles, including serving as Sports Editor for the school’s newspaper.

Following high school, George enlisted in the U.S. Marines in 1956. After completing his training at Parris Island and Camp Pendleton, he was stationed in Kaneohe, Oahu, Hawaii. As a Corporal and Corresponding Clerk, he took pride in his service and often shared stories from his time in Hawaii, including encounters with the film industry during the production of *South Pacific*.

Upon returning to Lowell, George embarked on a successful 40-year career with the New England Telephone Company, ultimately retiring as a Public Relations Director with Verizon. His professional journey was marked by his dedication to community involvement, particularly in youth sports. He played a pivotal role as Director and Coach of various local leagues, including the Sacred Heart Church CYO, the Lowell Junior Football League, and the Lowell Pop Warner Football League.

George’s commitment to education and public service was evident in his political career. He first served as Vice Chairman and Treasurer of the Democratic City Committee in the 1970s, later securing a position on the Lowell Public School Committee. During his tenure, he championed initiatives for female athletes and advocated for better facilities, including a gymnasium at Lowell High School.

After a brief hiatus from public office, George returned to serve on the Greater Lowell Technical High School Committee for an impressive 26 years. He focused on fostering partnerships between the schools and the community, supporting programs for students with disabilities, and promoting vocational education. His dedication to interscholastic sports led him to regularly attend games and officiate local leagues.

In addition to his political work, George was an active member of several organizations, including the Lowell Roadrunner’s Club, the Lowell/Chelmsford Lodge of Elks, and the Ancient Order of Hibernians. He served on the Board of the Alternative House and the Greater Lowell Technical High School Scholarship Committee, where he helped organize annual golf tournaments.

George’s family life was equally fulfilling. He was a devoted father and grandfather, creating cherished memories during annual vacations at Seabrook Beach and trips to Boston. His love for his grandchildren was evident during their time spent together at his home on Lake Winnipesaukee, where they enjoyed boating, skiing, and dining at local restaurants.

His passion for travel took him to destinations such as France, Zion National Park, and various European rivers. Notably, he made two trips to Ireland, where he proudly became an Irish citizen.

George is survived by his daughters, Susan O’Hare and Darragh O’Hare, five grandchildren, and one great-grandchild. He also leaves behind a niece, grandnephew, and numerous cousins. He was predeceased by his sister, Rita Thompson, and niece, Dana Kirane.

The family expressed profound gratitude to the caregivers at Sunny Acres Legacy Care for their compassion and dedication during George’s final days.

Family and friends are invited to attend calling hours on December 8, 2025, from 14:00 to 19:00 at the Fay McCabe Funeral Home in Lowell. The funeral will commence on the following morning at 09:00, concluding with a mass at Immaculate Conception Church at 10:00, followed by burial at St. Patrick’s Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations in George’s memory may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association or the Hidden Battles Foundation.
