Marlyn Marie Wedan, known for her warmth and devotion to family, passed away on September 13, 2025, at Lakewood Hospital in Staples, Minnesota. Surrounded by loved ones, she left a legacy of faith and cherished memories. Born on May 7, 1939, in Sanborn, Iowa, Marlyn was the daughter of Eldred and Helen Strang.
Growing up in the small community of Barrows, just south of Brainerd, Minnesota, Marlyn’s childhood was filled with laughter and adventure. She fondly recalled moments spent dressing up as an old lady to amuse her mother, fishing with her father, and playing with her brothers. As a teenager, she would ride the train between Little Falls and Brainerd for just 10 cents, seeking movies or adventures with friends.
Her faith journey began at an early age when she attended the ‘Girl Guard’ program at the Salvation Army. It was there she accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior, a cornerstone of her identity throughout her life. At 16, she met Eugene E. Wedan during a basketball game, and the two married on November 23, 1956.
The couple settled in Brainerd, where they welcomed their first daughter in 1958. Over the next several years, their family expanded to include three more daughters and a son, creating a household filled with love. In 1976, they became founding members of the Pequot Lakes Baptist Church, where Marlyn played a significant role in the community.
Marlyn’s culinary skills were well-known, especially her famous old-fashioned baked beans, which she shared while working in various local restaurants. In 1982, she shifted her career path to become a Nurse’s Aide, working for the St. Joseph’s Hospital Homecare program for 18 years before retiring to care for her husband.
Family was the focal point of Marlyn’s life. As a devoted grandmother, affectionately known as “Gramma Dan,” she treasured her time with her seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Her family memories included babysitting, attending concerts, and enjoying game nights filled with laughter.
Marlyn is survived by her daughters, Pam, Diane, and Janet Wedan, along with Marge (Terry) Hines and son Gary (Kristen) Wedan. She leaves behind grandchildren Wesley (JoEllen) Hines, Joe (Amber) Hines, Beau (Sam) Bacon, Leah Ahmann, Garrett (Adrienne) Wedan, Molly (Thomas) Moman, and Tanner (Haley) Wedan, as well as great-grandchildren Dylan and Riley Hines, Brianna and Kiara Bacon, Gabe Ahmann, and Eliza and Laila Moman.
She is also remembered by her brother Arnie (Karen) Strang, sister-in-law Joyce Strang, best friend Adele Orem, and many other cherished family and friends. Marlyn was preceded in death by her husband of 46 years, Gene, her parents, and her brothers, Eldred Jr. and Cecil Strang.
A memorial service will be conducted at Christ Community Church, located at 24646 Hazelwood Dr, Nisswa, MN, on October 11, 2025. The visitation will begin at 1 PM, followed by the service at 2 PM, with a luncheon to follow. In honor of Marlyn, attendees are encouraged to wear their finest earrings, symbolizing her vibrant spirit and love for life.
