McDaniel College officially welcomed its Class of 2029 during an Introduction Convocation held at the Baker Memorial Chapel on September 1, 2023. This significant event included the traditional ringing of the Old Main bell, a ritual that symbolizes the beginning of the academic journey for new students and the conclusion for graduating seniors on Commencement Day.
As part of the ceremony, faculty and staff processed into the chapel, creating an atmosphere of warmth and community. Dr. Julia Jasken, President of McDaniel College, addressed the incoming students, encouraging them to embrace their new environment. The convocation was not just a formal introduction but a heartfelt welcome into a vibrant academic community.
During the ceremony, Richard Smith, Ph.D., the college chaplain, delivered a poignant message, urging students to “not just be here but to be present.” This emphasis on engagement resonated deeply, highlighting the importance of active participation in both academic and campus life.
The event also featured remarks from Jay Artis, the President of the Student Government Association, who encouraged students to get involved in campus activities. His call to action reinforced the college’s commitment to fostering a dynamic student experience.
Following the speeches, new students lined up to participate in the bell-ringing ceremony, marking their official entry into the McDaniel community. The Old Main bell, located in Memorial Plaza, serves as a powerful symbol of the transition students undergo during their time at the college. As they rang in, many were assisted by faculty members, including Provost Flavius Lilly and Phillip A. Sullivan, Ph.D., Dean of Students, who played vital roles in welcoming the students.
Among those participating in the bell-ringing were students from various locations, including Aryeh Murphy of Columbia, Bruce Black of Bowie, and Madison Ford of Arlington, all of whom shared this memorable experience with their peers. Each student’s personal connection to the event added to the rich tapestry of the day.
The ceremony concluded with the singing of the school’s Alma Mater, as students and faculty united in celebration. This annual event not only marks the start of the academic year but also reinforces the sense of belonging that McDaniel College aims to cultivate among its students.
As the Class of 2029 begins their journey, they carry with them the hopes and encouragement of the McDaniel community, ready to engage in the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead. The ringing of the Old Main bell will forever remind them of this pivotal moment in their educational paths.
