On September 15, 2023, the Letitia Green Stevenson Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) and the General Joseph Bartholomew Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution (SAR) convened at Grace Church in Normal, Illinois, for their annual meeting and awards ceremony. The event commemorated the signing of the U.S. Constitution on September 17, 1787, highlighting the importance of this foundational document in American history.
Nearly 80 attendees gathered to celebrate the occasion, including local officials and community leaders. The ceremony commenced with opening remarks from Marilyn Nelson, regent of the DAR chapter, and Jay Cummins, president of the SAR chapter. Following the welcome address, the program included the Pledge of Allegiance, led by SAR Chaplain Ray Owens, and the SAR Pledge, led by SAR Secretary Rick Milner. The American’s Creed was recited by DAR First Vice Regent Laura Baue, and the invocation was delivered by DAR Chaplain Carolyn Jiles.
Keynote Speech and Awards Presentation
The keynote speaker for the event was Judge Scott Kording of the 11th Judicial Circuit Court of Illinois, who presented a talk titled “You Be the Judge: The Enduring Relevance of Textualism in Defense of Constitutional Fidelity.” His insights underscored the continuing relevance of the Constitution in contemporary legal discussions.
Following Judge Kording’s address, SAR Chapter President Jay Cummins introduced Steve Kern, chairman of public service and heroism, to present awards recognizing exceptional contributions to public service. Among the recipients of the Law Enforcement Certificates and Medals were McLean County Sheriff Matt Lane, Darren Wolf, Emergency Communication Manager for Bloomington, and Kevin Raisbeck, Detective with the Bloomington Police Department. Troopers Joseph Steward and Logan Wunder of Illinois State Police Troop 4 also received accolades.
A special Life Saving Certificate and Medal was awarded to Dispatcher Isabella Petrilli, acknowledging her critical role in emergency response. Additionally, Master Sergeant Billy Quinn and Acting Master Sergeant Ben Reichard of ISP Troop 5 were recognized with Heroism Certificates and Medals for their bravery and dedication to public safety.
Closing Remarks and Community Engagement
As the event drew to a close, Marilyn Nelson and Jay Cummins offered final remarks, emphasizing the significance of community service and the values represented by the Constitution. The ceremony concluded with the SAR recessional, led by Cummins, leaving attendees inspired by the contributions of local heroes and the enduring legacy of the U.S. Constitution.
