Oklahoma City Thunder guard Nikola Topic has commenced chemotherapy treatment following a diagnosis of testicular cancer. The Thunder’s general manager, Sam Presti, confirmed the news during a press briefing on Thursday, expressing optimism regarding Topic’s long-term health.
Topic, the No. 12 overall pick in the 2024 NBA Draft, had missed the previous season due to recovery from a torn ACL. In early October 2023, he underwent a biopsy at MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas. After receiving the diagnosis, Topic requested that the team keep his condition private until he began treatment.
Presti noted the encouraging outlook from medical professionals, stating, “Doctors are extremely positive” about Topic’s recovery. While the young Serbian guard has been able to participate in workouts during his chemotherapy, no specific timeline has been set for his return to the court.
“Our only expectations for him are to focus on this,” Presti emphasized. “This is his most important priority. He’ll be back playing basketball when he’s able to, but we’re not putting any time length or expectations on that obviously. He has our total support, encouragement, and love.”
The Thunder organization and fans alike are rallying around Topic during this challenging time. As the team continues to prepare for the upcoming season, the focus remains on ensuring that he receives the care and support he needs.
This situation underscores the importance of health and well-being, especially for athletes facing serious medical challenges. The Thunder community is hopeful for Topic’s recovery and looks forward to welcoming him back when the time is right.
