John R. Sopp, a respected member of the Kingston community, passed away on November 14, 2025, after a brief but courageous battle with cancer. He was 74 years old. Born on April 15, 1951, in Kingston, John was the son of the late John J. and Anne Sopp. His lifelong commitment to his hometown was evident throughout his life, particularly in his professional achievements and community involvement.
A Life of Achievement and Community Service
After graduating from Wyoming Valley West High School in 1969, John pursued a degree in Economics from Wilkes University. He built a notable career, serving as a pension fund manager at the Don Williamson Agency prior to his retirement. Additionally, he dedicated over 30 years to various roles at General Foods, including Maxwell House and the Kraft Division, where he earned respect as a Regional Sales Manager known for his leadership and dedication to his colleagues.
John’s commitment to his community was reflected in his numerous roles, including serving on the Executive Board of the Wyoming Valley Sanitary Authority. He was a former member and past president of Kingston Council and contributed to the Shade Tree Commission and the Kingston Historical Society. His service was driven by a deep belief in giving back to the community that shaped his values and character.
Family and Personal Life
John is survived by his beloved wife of 53 years, Carol Sopp, and their four daughters: Johnyne (Rick) Hoyes, Keera (Bill) Tabor, Jill (Jonathan) Seitzinger, and Karin (Brandon) Ulitchney. He took great pride in his family, particularly his role as Grampy to his grandchildren: Ricky and Rylie Hoyes; Keerstyn and Brynlee Tabor; Nathan Sopp; and Luna and Apollo Ulitchney. His family brought him immense joy and fulfillment, and he cherished every moment spent with them.
Music was another passion of John’s life. He enjoyed attending concerts with family and friends and played in several local bands during his younger years. Additionally, he looked forward to annual beach trips, where he created lasting memories with his loved ones. At home, he was known as the family chef, especially during the holidays when he prepared traditional dishes such as ravioli, meatballs, and sauce, fostering a legacy of love and togetherness.
John’s presence, kindness, and unwavering love for his family will be profoundly missed but forever remembered by those who knew him.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, December 18, 2025, at 11:30 a.m. at St. Nicholas-St. Mary Parish, located at 226 S. Washington Street, Wilkes-Barre, PA 18701. Interment will follow at St. Nicholas Cemetery in Shavertown. Attendees are asked to go directly to the church on the day of the service.
Friends and family may visit on Wednesday, December 17, 2025, from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Nat Gawlas Jordan Funeral Home, situated at 89 Park Avenue, Wilkes-Barre.
