New York City’s ferry service has introduced a new route connecting St. George in Staten Island to Bay Ridge in Brooklyn. This route officially commenced today, October 15, 2023, marking the revival of a historic waterway link that had been discontinued since the opening of the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge in 1964. According to reports from SILive, this expansion is part of an initiative by the New York City Economic Development Corporation to enhance transportation options for commuters throughout the city.
Changes to the ferry routes coincide with recent adjustments to major subway lines, particularly the F and M lines, which have swapped routes. These changes have prompted the ferry service to modify its operations to better serve passengers. During peak commuting hours, the East River route will operate as two separate routes. Additionally, the Soundview and Rockaway routes have been combined, aiming to reduce transfer times for riders heading to popular destinations like Midtown and East 90th Street. PIX11 reports that these updates are part of the broader Ferry Optimization Plan.
With the launch of the St. George route, the ferry will now serve western Manhattan and the American Veterans Memorial Pier in Bay Ridge. From Bay Ridge, the service continues to Atlantic Avenue, Brooklyn Bridge Park, and Pier 11 at Wall Street. This expansion creates a more seamless travel experience for Staten Island commuters, allowing them to connect to the extensive NYC Ferry network and reach destinations such as Governors Island or Astoria via transfers at the Wall Street/Pier 11 stop.
Commuters utilizing the new ferry route can expect service approximately every 37 minutes during peak hours. Off-peak trips are scheduled roughly 50 minutes apart. The cost for a single ride is $4.50, with additional fare options available, including a 10-trip ticket for $29 and an unlimited two-day pass for $15. Tickets can be purchased through the NYC Ferry app or at vending machines located at ferry terminals.
For detailed information on schedules, routes, and terminal maps, passengers are encouraged to visit the official NYC Ferry website. This new route not only enhances travel convenience for commuters but also reinforces the city’s ongoing efforts to improve public transportation accessibility.
