The Natchez-Adams County Airport in Mississippi will introduce its first commercial passenger flights in three decades, with daily service scheduled to commence on July 1, 2026. This significant development will connect the region directly to the Greater Houston Area, offering travelers access to one of the largest airline hubs in the United States.
SkyWest Airlines, operating under the United Express brand, confirmed the new daily flights to and from George Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston. This initiative aims to enhance connectivity for the Miss-Lou region, allowing residents and visitors to access numerous destinations across the country and beyond. City and airline officials expressed optimism about the new route, highlighting its potential economic benefits.
Dan Gibson, the Mayor of Natchez, noted that the city has been working to restore airline service since 2021. The announcement aligns with broader economic development goals and tourism initiatives, as outlined by the mayor’s office. Gibson emphasized the transformative impact of the new flights, stating, “Can you imagine the conferences that are now going to come here?”
The anticipated increase in air traffic is expected to be significant. An independent study by Visit Natchez predicts that the new service will attract over 10,000 passengers within the first 12 to 18 months. This influx could greatly benefit local businesses and tourism, which have been adversely affected by the lack of commercial flights.
In addition to the airline service, the city is nearing completion of a $3 million renovation of its convention center. This upgrade is expected to further enhance Natchez’s appeal as a destination for conferences and events. Mayor Gibson also mentioned that a planned movie production in the area previously fell through due to the absence of commercial air service. “We have a 100,000 square foot movie studio that is about to be busy,” he said, indicating potential growth in the film industry as well.
The airport has received over $6 million in grant funding to support its transformation, ensuring the necessary infrastructure is in place for the new service. Congress has also approved $1 million specifically for new firefighting equipment, which will be ready by the time the inaugural flight lands.
The flights will be operated using a 50-seat Bombardier Canadian Regional Jet 200, with an estimated flight time of around 45 minutes each way. Travelers can begin booking tickets through United Airlines now, marking a new chapter for air travel in Natchez and the surrounding regions.
As the region prepares for this new era of connectivity, the collaboration between local leaders and airlines highlights the importance of accessible transportation in driving economic growth and enhancing community outreach.
