Buffalo Mayor-Elect Sean Ryan engaged with the community during a live discussion on Monday, addressing critical issues facing the city, including potential tax increases, job creation, and his transition team. During the session, Ryan emphasized the necessity of tax adjustments, stating, “If someone tells you we don’t need to raise taxes, they’re lying to you.” He pointed to the city’s history of 19 years without tax increases as a contributing factor to the current financial challenges.
Ryan acknowledged that the exact extent of any tax increases remains uncertain until his administration fully assesses the city’s deficit. He underscored the need for a thoughtful approach to taxation, saying, “We can’t have a tax shock; we need to have a soft landing.” To achieve this, Ryan plans to collaborate with government partners, including those in Erie County and New York State, to navigate the financial landscape effectively.
Leadership Changes and Job Applications
As he prepares to take office in January 2024, Ryan indicated that changes in leadership are forthcoming, particularly within the city’s police and fire departments. When asked about the future of Buffalo Police Commissioner Alphonso Wright and Buffalo Fire Commissioner William Renaldo, Ryan confirmed their anticipated retirements, stating, “Those two in particular, I believe, have both publicly announced they’re retiring.” However, a spokesperson for the City of Buffalo later clarified that neither commissioner has officially announced their retirement.
In addition to discussing leadership, Ryan highlighted the significant interest in employment opportunities within his administration. Since posting job openings last Thursday, nearly 400 applicants have expressed interest. “We’ll have, hopefully, the best and the brightest,” Ryan stated, indicating his commitment to assembling a capable team.
Ryan’s transition team is already in formation, aiming to fill numerous positions within the city government. This proactive approach reflects his intention to address Buffalo’s challenges head-on and implement effective solutions as he steps into office.
As Ryan prepares for his term, he remains focused on fostering collaboration with local and state officials, emphasizing that strategic partnerships will be essential for navigating the city’s financial recovery.
