GRANITE QUARRY, NC — December 2, 2023: Granite Quarry just lit up the holiday season with its annual Christmas at the Lake celebration, drawing families and friends to the scenic Granite Lake Park. The event, which kicked off on Saturday, featured the stunning Festival of Trees that illuminated the lakeside, captivating attendees as the sun set.
As families gathered around the lake, festive characters including the Gingerbread Man, Abominable Snowman, and the Grinch mingled with children, creating an enchanting atmosphere. Attendees enjoyed various activities, from lawn games to s’more making, while eagerly anticipating the evening’s main event—the lighting ceremony.
The town also introduced a house light competition, inviting residents to showcase their holiday spirit. Sponsored by Select Realty and Nothing Bundt Cakes, the winner will receive a yard sign and a $100 gift card to enhance their holiday decorations.
Additionally, the community participated in Operation Christmas Spirit, a vital program aimed at supporting families in need. “We get a Christmas list from the family with what they need,” said Granite Quarry Event Coordinator Debbie Loflin-Benge. “It’s essential items like food and toilet paper—things that are necessary.”
Children also had the chance to write letters to Santa, either dropping them in a special mailbox or delivering them directly to Santa himself, who made a surprise appearance for photos. The festive atmosphere was enhanced by Christmas music and holiday lawn games, creating a delightful experience for all ages.
With the help of 15 volunteers and staff, the event was expertly organized, featuring local vendors and food stalls around the parking lot, including Happy’s Farm, which provided hot chocolate and candy apples. A cozy firepit, sponsored by Novant Health, allowed attendees to warm up while making s’mores.
At 5:45 p.m., a large crowd gathered in anticipation of the tree lighting. For the first time in Granite Quarry’s history, the town showcased a majestic over 10-foot tall tree, adorned with glowing white lights, standing out among dozens of other decorated trees contributed by local businesses, churches, and organizations.
After a few words from Mayor Brittany Barnhardt, the moment arrived—dozens of trees lit up almost simultaneously, and cheers erupted from the crowd as families snapped photos against the stunning backdrop.
This year’s Christmas at the Lake not only brightened the lakeside but also strengthened community bonds, showcasing the true spirit of the season. As families left the event, the warmth of holiday cheer lingered, ensuring that this celebration would be remembered long after the lights dimmed.
With ongoing excitement and festive activities, Granite Quarry continues to embrace the holiday spirit, making it a must-see destination this season.
