At least five people were killed and ten injured in a series of intense Russian airstrikes on Ukraine, according to President Volodymyr Zelensky on March 10, 2024. The attacks involved over 50 missiles and cruise missiles, alongside approximately 500 drones, targeting various regions across the country. The Lviv region, located in western Ukraine near the Polish border, suffered the most casualties, with four deaths reported.
The strikes also affected the regions of Zaporizhzhya, Sumy, Kharkiv, Odessa, and Kherson, where Russian forces focused on vital infrastructure. Zelensky emphasized the urgent need for enhanced protection and accelerated implementation of defense agreements, particularly in air defense, to counter what he termed “air terror.” He remarked, “We need more protection and a faster implementation of all defence agreements, especially in the area of air defence, to render this air terror meaningless.”
Ceasefire and Diplomatic Pathways
In his address, Zelensky indicated that a ceasefire in the skies could be a precursor to genuine diplomatic discussions, though he provided no details on how this might be achieved. He urged the United States and European nations to take decisive action to compel Russian President Vladimir Putin to reconsider his aggressive stance.
In parallel, military authorities in Poland reported no violations of Polish airspace during the recent escalation. Fighter jets were temporarily deployed in response to the threat, but have since returned to normal operations. The Polish armed forces confirmed through a statement that they are continuously monitoring the situation to ensure the security of their airspace.
Additionally, Dutch Air Force F-35 fighter jets contributed to Poland’s air defense overnight, demonstrating international cooperation in the face of escalating tensions. The situation remains fluid as rescue and reconstruction efforts continue in the affected regions of Ukraine.
The recent airstrikes underscore the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Ukraine, as President Zelensky’s administration seeks additional support from allies to bolster defense capabilities and protect civilians from further attacks.
