A newly emerged social media account linked to the Israeli intelligence agency, Mossad, has made sensational claims regarding Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. According to the account, which identifies itself as the official Farsi-language spokesperson for Mossad, Khamenei reportedly spends much of his time “snoozing” and “getting high.” This provocative message raises concerns about the capacity of a leader who allegedly devotes his days to substance use.
The account, which has gained attention for its unusual and provocative posts, poses a question: “How can a leader lead when they sleep half the day and spend the other half high on substances?” The statements reflect a strategy that diverges from typical Mossad communication, yet intelligence experts suggest the account’s authenticity.
According to Zvi Yehezkeli, a prominent commentator on Arab affairs for i24News, this approach represents a new tactic in psychological warfare. Yehezkeli asserts that Iranians are increasingly disillusioned with their government, allowing Mossad to operate differently within the country compared to elsewhere. Beny Sabti, an Iran expert at Israel’s Institute for National Security Studies, echoes this sentiment, noting that some information shared by the account could only originate from Mossad.
Claims of Khamenei’s alleged drug use are not unprecedented. In a 2022 television interview on a channel affiliated with the Muslim Brotherhood, Iranian academic Nour Mohamed Omara asserted that Khamenei frequently uses drugs. He claimed that a special village in Balochistan produces the substances consumed by the Supreme Leader, with operations overseen by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.
Despite these allegations, Khamenei has publicly condemned drug use as “un-Islamic” since the 1979 Iranian Revolution. The penalties for drug-related offenses in Iran remain severe, including the death penalty.
As of now, Mossad has not officially confirmed or denied its involvement with the social media account or the claims regarding Khamenei’s alleged substance use. This controversy continues to unfold, potentially impacting perceptions of Iran’s leadership both domestically and internationally.
