Mormon women have demonstrated a remarkable enthusiasm for a newly redesigned version of the temple garments, a significant item of clothing within the faith, prompting a surge in demand that has led some to resort to the black market. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints recently unveiled a “slightly more revealing” design, marking the first change to these garments in nearly two centuries.
Traditionally, temple garments are white and modest, symbolizing a commitment to God and the promises made by church members. The previous design featured cap sleeves and a high cut, which some women found difficult to wear under contemporary clothing styles. In response to feedback, the church introduced a new tank-top version at the end of 2023 to provide options for those living in warmer climates.
The redesigned garments became available in the United States in early March 2024, where the largest concentration of Mormons resides. The church appears to have underestimated the demand, as long queues formed outside stores, with many eager to purchase the new items.
Andrea Fausett, a 31-year-old influencer from Hawaii, expressed her determination to acquire the garments, stating, “I will get them at all costs. I will fly to Japan if I need to,” during an interview with The New York Times. Shayla Egan, another church member, shared her shock on Instagram after waiting over three hours in line for the new garments, emphasizing the excitement surrounding the release.
Women in the community have voiced their eagerness to obtain the redesigned garments, with stylist McKenna Banks noting that many Mormons were “dying” to get their hands on them. The high demand has given rise to a black market where individuals are paying inflated prices, with some sourcing garments from countries such as Uganda, Kenya, South Africa, and the Philippines, where larger quantities were initially released. Reports indicate that prices have reached over US$150 plus shipping for these items.
Social media has been flooded with posts from those fortunate enough to secure the new garments, many expressing overwhelming joy. One user on TikTok shared, “Me crying because someone sent me a tank top garment so I can wear it on my wedding day and have sleeves just like my little girl heart wanted.” Another expressed, “When you’re finally able to wear tops with no sleeves and feel closer to God than ever.”
Despite the excitement, the limited availability has also sparked disappointment among some church members, with feelings of jealousy regarding those who managed to purchase the garments. Many expressed their surprise at the level of demand, with some non-Mormons commenting on the phenomenon. One observer remarked, “A church having a merch drop is WILD,” while another noted the peculiar nature of waiting in line for “church-approved underwear.”
Historically, female Mormons have raised concerns about the discomfort associated with the previous garment design. Many have reported feelings of body shame and significant discomfort that affected their overall wellbeing and intimate relationships.
The recent changes to the temple garments highlight a broader conversation within the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints regarding the needs and preferences of its members, particularly women. As the demand for the new designs continues, it remains to be seen how the church will respond to the enthusiastic feedback and the ongoing challenges of supply and distribution.
