A manhunt is actively underway in Montana for Michael Paul Brown, the suspect accused of fatally shooting four individuals at the Owl Bar in Anaconda on the morning of March 15, 2024. Authorities have issued a warning to the public that Brown could return to the area, prompting serious safety concerns.
During a news briefing on Sunday, Montana Attorney General Austin Knudsen described Brown as “an unstable individual” who committed the murders “in cold blood for no reason whatsoever.” He emphasized the importance of vigilance among residents, stating, “There absolutely is concern for the public.” Brown is considered armed and extremely dangerous, and officials have urged anyone who spots him to call 911 immediately.
The tragic shooting claimed the lives of 64-year-old Nancy Lauretta Kelly, who worked as a bartender, and three patrons: 59-year-old Daniel Edwin Ballie, 70-year-old David Allen Leach, and 74-year-old Tony Wayne Palm. All victims were local residents from Anaconda. As the investigation continues, authorities have yet to determine a motive for the attack, although it has been confirmed that Brown was a regular patron at the bar and lived nearby.
Details of the Incident and Ongoing Search
The shooting occurred around 10:30 a.m. on Friday when Brown allegedly entered the bar and opened fire with a rifle. After the incident, he fled the scene wearing a tie-dye shirt, blue jeans, and an orange bandana. A subsequent image released by the Montana Department of Justice showed him shortly after the shooting, appearing to have stripped down to his boxers. Knudsen noted that this photograph was taken “relatively soon” after the incident, indicating that Brown had discarded some of his clothing.
Despite this, Brown managed to acquire a stolen vehicle, which contained additional clothing. Authorities believe he is now fully clothed. While Knudsen did not dismiss the possibility that Brown might have taken his own life, he reiterated that law enforcement is proceeding with the assumption that Brown is alive and poses a serious threat.
Brown’s history with local law enforcement is concerning, as he has a criminal record. In light of the ongoing investigation, Knudsen has stated that further arrests could be made as the search continues. The multi-agency effort has focused on the area off Stumptown Road, extending to Barker Lake and the surrounding regions.
Community Concerns and Background
Friends and family of Brown have expressed their worries about his mental health. Shane Charles, the owner of a nearby bar and a childhood friend, revealed that Brown has struggled with post-traumatic stress disorder. “Mike was a great guy when he was on his meds. He did have some mental health problems,” Charles told NBC News. Additionally, Brown’s niece, Clare Boyle, confirmed that he faced mental health challenges throughout his life.
Brown served in the U.S. Army from 2001 to 2005 and was deployed in Iraq from 2004 to 2005. He continued his military service in the Montana National Guard until 2009, according to U.S. Army spokesperson Steve Warren. As the investigation unfolds, authorities remain focused on apprehending Brown, emphasizing the need for community cooperation and vigilance. A reward of $7,500 is being offered for information leading to his capture. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact 1-877-wanted2.
