Japan’s anime industry has reached new heights, achieving record revenues of $25 billion (3.8 trillion yen) in 2024. This marks a remarkable growth of 14.8 percent compared to the previous year, driven largely by the increasing global popularity of anime. The findings were announced by the Association of Japanese Animations (AJA) during the TIFFCOM content market, which coincides with the Tokyo International Film Festival.
The AJA’s upcoming annual Anime Industry Report 2025 highlights that international sales now dominate the market. Overseas revenue accounted for 56 percent of total sales in 2024, reaching $14.25 billion (2.17 trillion yen). In contrast, domestic revenues stood at $10.97 billion (1.67 trillion yen), making up 44 percent of the total. This shift underscores a significant trend, as international revenues have consistently driven growth, with a substantial 26 percent increase from the previous year.
The report indicates that the expansion in 2024 is the strongest since 2019, when the industry saw a 15.3 percent increase. According to Masahiko Hasegawa, the lead author of the report, “The overseas market now far exceeds local revenues, and this gap will only widen.” He noted that the growth encompasses various revenue streams, including theatrical rights, streaming, merchandising, and events, rather than relying solely on content distribution.
Notably, the impressive growth in 2024 does not account for the phenomenal success of Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle, which premiered on September 12 and has become the highest-grossing Japanese film of all time, amassing a staggering $670 million globally. Additionally, the recent release of Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc on October 24 has contributed to the industry’s remarkable earnings, generating $139 million worldwide.
The AJA has been meticulously gathering industry data for over two decades. It reports that the anime sector has experienced consistent annual growth since 2009, even during the pandemic. Since 2020, international revenue has outpaced domestic sales, marking a significant milestone in the industry’s evolution.
The report also highlights the financial health of anime studios, which are essential to the industry’s success. In 2024, the production sector recorded $3.06 billion (466.2 billion yen) in total sales, reflecting a 9.1 percent increase from the previous year. Overseas studio revenue reached $781 million (118.8 billion yen), illustrating the global demand for anime and the vital role of Japanese studios in creating content that resonates internationally.
As the anime industry continues to thrive, its influence on global entertainment is undeniable. With robust international sales and a growing audience, the future looks bright for Japan’s beloved art form.
