URGENT UPDATE: The city of Yukon, Oklahoma, has officially announced that plans for a multi-million dollar amphitheater project will not proceed. Mayor Brian Pillmore revealed during a city council meeting on September 26, 2023, that the decision follows a comprehensive economic feasibility study commissioned by the city, which cost $60,000.
The proposed Sunset Amphitheater, which was set to be located near I-40 and Frisco Road, aimed to accommodate 12,500 attendees and was projected to generate billions in economic impact over the first decade. However, the study indicated potential losses of over $91 million in expected sales tax revenue to the city over 30 years due to a tax-sharing agreement with the Venu Group.
Mayor Pillmore emphasized that the council’s decision reflects a commitment to the long-term well-being of the community. “I think our community should be very satisfied that we have a council that listens to them,” he stated. “We evaluated what is best for the city, not just for any one citizen.”
The study also revealed that while there was some potential return for Yukon, it was not substantial enough to justify the investment. The overall construction costs were estimated at $98 million, and the city would have needed to provide additional parking spaces and infrastructure.
Pillmore confirmed that communication with Venu has been ongoing and collaborative throughout the planning process. “We’ve talked to them throughout this whole process, week by week, month by month,” he noted. “There are no surprises for any business considering entering the City of Yukon.”
In light of the decision, Pillmore reassured residents that Yukon remains open for future development opportunities, but emphasized the need for any project to be the right fit. “Yukon is open for business,” he stated, adding that the city will continue to explore viable options for the land initially designated for the amphitheater.
While the amphitheater project is now considered closed, the city is actively seeking alternative developments that align more closely with community interests and financial viability. As discussions continue, residents and local stakeholders are encouraged to engage in the dialogue about future projects.
