UPDATE: A winter weather advisory has just been issued for six Michigan counties, effective from 10 p.m. EST today until 4 p.m. EST Wednesday. The National Weather Service warns residents of total snow accumulations between 3 and 7 inches, posing serious risks for travelers.
Authorities emphasize that this weather event will create hazardous road conditions, particularly affecting the Wednesday morning and evening commutes. “Plan on slippery road conditions,” the weather service cautions. “Roads, especially bridges and overpasses, will likely become slick and hazardous.”
As snow blankets the region, the potential for accidents increases significantly. Each year, winter weather contributes to over 6,000 weather-related vehicle fatalities and more than 480,000 injuries across the United States. With temperatures hovering near freezing, drivers are urged to prioritize safety and adjust their travel plans accordingly.
Residents in Lake, Osceola, Clare, Newaygo, Mecosta, and Isabella counties should be prepared for treacherous conditions. If you must travel, ensure your vehicle is equipped with essential winter supplies, including a windshield scraper, jumper cables, a small shovel, flashlight, cell phone, blanket, warm clothing, drinking water, and high-calorie non-perishable food.
In case of an emergency, if you become stranded, stay calm and notify someone of your situation and location. It’s crucial to avoid walking to safety. Instead, signal for help by attaching a cloth to your car’s antenna or mirror, and make your vehicle visible by using your dome light and flashers.
Authorities stress the importance of being mindful of snow plows, which will be actively clearing the roads. Allow them room to operate and only overtake when it is safe to do so.
Before heading out, check the current road conditions to make informed decisions about your travel plans. Share your itinerary with family or friends to ensure someone is aware of your route and estimated arrival time.
As this winter storm unfolds, residents are reminded to stay safe and vigilant. The combination of snow accumulation and near-freezing temperatures creates a situation that can escalate quickly. Stay tuned for further updates as conditions develop, and keep safety at the forefront of your travel plans.
