Winneshiek County Historical Society Announces Dickensian Celebrations

URGENT UPDATE: The Winneshiek County Historical Society is set to bring back its beloved Dickensian events this year, featuring a spectacular production of “A Christmas Carol” performed by acclaimed actor Ray Carver. The show will take place on Saturday, December 6, 2023, from 6:30 PM to 8:30 PM at T-Bock’s Upstairs in Decorah, Iowa, with doors opening at 6:00 PM.

This year’s performance follows a highly successful debut in 2022, captivating audiences with its festive spirit. Tickets, priced at $15, are already available at several locations: Kanpai Soda Shop, Decorah Area Chamber of Commerce, and the Winneshiek County Historical Society itself. Given the limited seating, attendees are urged to arrive early as seating is on a first-come, first-served basis.

In addition to the evening performance, the society will kick off its fourth annual “Dickens on Mill Street” celebration earlier that same day, from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM at 302 S. Mill St.. This enchanting event invites visitors to meet Carver as he portrays Charles Dickens, alongside characters from “A Christmas Carol” including the Cratchit family, Ebenezer Scrooge, and the spectral visitors from the story.

Families can enjoy interactive children’s games with live characters, while Mother Christmas will be on hand to hear children’s wishes. Organizers will also distribute gift bags filled with traditional English goodies for participating children.

Adding to the festive atmosphere, a live brass quartet and carolers will provide holiday music, enhancing the immersive experience. Attendees can sample Victorian-era foods at the Treat Table, reminiscent of the Christmas celebrations depicted in Dickens’ works.

For just $5 per person, horse-drawn carriage rides will offer a delightful way to explore the area, and visitors will get a sneak peek of the Historical Society’s newly completed archive building.

The event will feature photo exhibits showcasing the early English settlers of Decorah and a special exhibition of Victorian toys, making it a perfect outing for families looking to celebrate the holiday season.

As excitement builds, be sure to secure your tickets and mark your calendars for this heartwarming celebration of literature and community. Don’t miss out on this opportunity to step back in time and experience the magic of Dickens!
