BREAKING: Two separate crashes in Eastern Oregon have tragically claimed the lives of two individuals just days apart. The Oregon State Police (OSP) confirmed that the first incident occurred on August 27, 2023, in Union County, followed by a second fatal crash on August 30, 2023, in Grant County.
The first crash took place at approximately 4:22 p.m. on Interstate 84 near milepost 172. Authorities report that Jejo Haes, a 28-year-old resident of La Grande, was driving a white Ford F350 pickup westbound when the vehicle veered off the road, crashed into a tree, and landed at the bottom of a creek bed. Despite rapid response efforts, Haes was pronounced dead at the scene. The cause of the crash is still under investigation.
Just three days later, at 1:42 p.m. on August 30, OSP responded to another deadly incident on Highway 402 near milepoint 31.5. Phillip Westly Bunger, a 63-year-old motorcyclist from Tacoma, Washington, was riding a maroon Honda motorcycle eastbound when the bike struck loose gravel on the shoulder, causing him to lose control. Bunger tragically tipped over and rolled several times before succumbing to his injuries at the scene. The factors leading to this crash are also under investigation.
Authorities have confirmed that neither crash affected traffic flow significantly, allowing other drivers to continue their journeys without major disruption.
These incidents highlight the urgent need for road safety awareness, especially as the summer driving season continues. As investigations proceed, the Oregon State Police urge all drivers to remain vigilant and cautious on the roads.
