UPDATE: Hundreds of activists gathered at the Minnesota Capitol on July 17, 2023, demanding immediate action to ban assault weapons following a devastating mass shooting at Annunciation Catholic School that resulted in the deaths of two children and injuries to 18 others. The rally emphasized the urgent need for lawmakers to prioritize public safety over the interests of the gun lobby.
“We cannot allow our schools to become sites of fear and violence,” stated Timberlyn Mazeikis, a survivor of a mass shooting at Michigan State University in 2023 and a volunteer leader with the Students Demand Action group at the University of Minnesota. “It is critical for Minnesota lawmakers to act now to ban assault weapons and high-capacity magazines. We are here to urge Gov. Tim Walz to call a special legislative session focused on public safety.”
Just last week, Gov. Walz announced plans to convene state lawmakers for a special session to address gun violence following the tragic shooting in Minneapolis. Leaders including Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey and Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison are advocating for a ban on semiautomatic rifles and restrictions on magazine capacities.
The rally, organized by Minnesota Youth and supported by various gun prevention groups such as Moms Demand Action and Brady United, highlighted alarming statistics linking assault weapons to mass shootings. “These weapons are designed for the battlefield, not our schools, churches, or city streets,” emphasized a representative from Minnesota Youth.
Investigators revealed that the weapon used in the Minneapolis shooting was a semiautomatic rifle, firing 116 rounds in under four minutes, according to Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara. This incident has sparked renewed calls for stricter gun control measures.
Despite the mounting pressure, Republican leaders have expressed resistance to new gun control legislation. Senate Majority Leader Mark Johnson criticized the special session call as a “partisan stunt,” advocating instead for addressing the root causes of violence, emphasizing access to mental health resources.
The urgency of this rally resonates deeply with attendees, many of whom are directly affected by gun violence. “At least nine out of the ten mass shooting incidents with the most casualties since 2015 involved firearms equipped with high-capacity magazines,” a spokesperson for Minnesota Youth stated. “State-level assault weapon bans have proven effective in reducing the likelihood of active shooter events.”
As the situation develops, attention remains focused on whether Gov. Walz will officially call the special session and what legislative actions may arise. Advocates are determined to see swift measures implemented to ensure the safety of schools and communities across Minnesota.
The rally at the Capitol marks a crucial moment in the ongoing debate over gun control in the U.S. As tensions rise and the public demands change, all eyes will be on Minnesota lawmakers to see if they will respond to the urgent calls for reform.
