Urgent: Fall Prevention Workshop at Stafford Library Draws Crowd

UPDATE: A significant fall prevention workshop took place at the Nora Larabee Memorial Library in Stafford on August 26, 2023, drawing nearly 20 attendees eager to enhance their safety and well-being. Led by expert Jennifer Gleason, the session, titled “Don’t Fall for It!” shared crucial strategies for reducing fall risks.

Attendees learned key takeaways to boost their safety: increasing activity levels, improving range of motion, and regaining balance. These objectives can be achieved through a low-stress exercise class offered by Gleason at the Recreation Center on Monday and Thursday mornings. The class is filling up quickly, but a waiting list is available, and additional sessions may be scheduled. Interested participants can contact the library for more information.

Gleason emphasized the importance of creating a safer home environment. Essential tips shared during the workshop include:
– Removing clutter to prevent tripping
– Stabilizing or removing area rugs
– Installing night lights for better visibility at night
– Carefully managing extension cords
– Evaluating footwear for better support

“One thing I forgot to mention is to just slow down,” Gleason advised. She highlighted the need for individuals to take their time with tasks to avoid rushing and subsequently falling.

As a sedentary lifestyle can weaken the body and lead to an increased risk of falls, Gleason encouraged attendees to get active and enjoy life.

In addition to the fall prevention workshop, the library hosted a Recently Read book conversation on the same day at 5:30 p.m. Participants engaged in discussions about various books, including:
– “Where the Blue Sky Begins” by Katie Powner
– “The Crash” by Freida McFadden
– “Heart of the West” by Penelope Williamson
– “James” by Percival Everett
– “Daughter of a Daughter of a Queen” by Sarah Bird
– “Mobituaries: Great Lives Worth Reliving” by Mo Rocca

The diverse topics sparked lively discussions, making for an engaging evening at the library.

Looking ahead, the library has several upcoming events:
– Monday mornings from 10-11 a.m.: Preschool Story Hour
– Wednesdays (excluding the 2nd Wednesday): ESOL with Rachel Sandoval at 6 p.m.
– September 8: Library Land Sale at the Senior Center – Carr Auction at 11 a.m.
– August 1 – November 1: “Awesome Library Reads” Book Challenge
– September 23: Recently Read Book Conversation at 5:30 p.m.

Stay tuned for open enrollment details for Medicare Part D. The next board meeting is scheduled for September 10, 2025.
