UPDATE: In a thrilling finish, San Juan Hills’ kicker Kyle Donahue converted a clutch 24-yard field goal as time expired, securing a stunning 28-27 victory over Downey in the Southern Section Division 2 football playoffs on Friday night.
The 17-year-old senior has emerged as a key player this season, boasting an impressive record of 11 of 13 field goals and achieving 93% of his kickoffs resulting in touchbacks. His performance has drawn high praise from head coach Robert Frith, who stated, “He’s proven to be accurate and clutch.”
Donahue’s journey to becoming a standout kicker has been remarkable. While he has played soccer for over a decade, it wasn’t until high school that he dedicated himself to football kicking. This is his first season as the starting kicker for San Juan Hills, and he shows no signs of slowing down, expressing, “I love it.”
In a tense moment before the final kick, Downey attempted to disrupt his focus with a timeout. Donahue initially made the kick, but it was nullified by a penalty. Undeterred, he nailed the second attempt, stating, “I was getting crowded pretty quickly. It was an amazing feeling.”
Looking ahead, San Juan Hills will face Los Alamitos in their next game, with potential rain in the forecast. However, Donahue remains confident, saying, “I feel great in all conditions. I’ve kicked in rain before.”
This incredible finish not only highlights Donahue’s talent but also serves as a testament to the excitement of high school sports. Stay tuned for more updates on his journey and the upcoming playoff games.
