BREAKING: Rabbi Philip Matov Posner, a revered community leader and social justice advocate, has passed away at the age of 86. He died peacefully on May 29, 2025, at the home he shared with his wife, Louise Drummond, in Jocotepec, Mexico. His legacy of compassion and justice will be celebrated at a public memorial on August 3rd at noon in Santa Cruz.
The memorial will take place at the El Rio Mobile Home Park Community Room, located at 2048 N. Pacific Avenue. Attendees can expect a heartfelt gathering that includes a short documentary highlighting his pivotal role as a Freedom Rider and reflections on his impactful life. Bagels will be served, creating a warm atmosphere for community remembrance.
Rabbi Posner was ordained in 1969 and dedicated his life to social justice, viewing the rabbinate as a platform for advocating compassion and confronting injustice. He served his longest term at Temple Beth El in Riverside, California, from 1971 to 1988, where he became a trusted leader within the community. His commitment to civil rights was evident when he joined the Freedom Riders in 1965, integrating a segregated train station and enduring 50 days in jail in Mississippi.
In Santa Cruz, Rabbi Posner continued his advocacy alongside his wife, actively participating in the Freedom Sleepers protest, where they slept outside City Hall with unhoused individuals twice a month. He also contributed to various boards, including Temple Chadeish Yameinu and the Association of Faith Communities.
A passionate author, Rabbi Posner traveled with his little dog, selling thousands of copies of his book, Food for Thought, Character, and Soul: A Conversation with the Rabbi and His Famous Friends. Known for his love of baking challah, he shared this tradition as a quiet act of care within the community.
As national discourse becomes increasingly confrontational, Rabbi Posner’s example of decency and ethical leadership will be profoundly missed. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to peoplefirstscc.org to support housing initiatives for those experiencing homelessness.
Rabbi Posner is survived by his wife, Louise Drummond; his sons, Hillel Posner and Micah Posner; his daughter-in-law, Akiko Minami; and his beloved grandchildren: Ziven Posner, Adyson Posner, Tamarah Posner Minami, and Emunah Posner Minami.
