Over 50 Volunteers Transform Vallejo Veteran’s Home on 9/11

UPDATE: Over 50 volunteers descended on the home of Vallejo veteran Hunter Blaine on September 11, 2023, to carry out extensive renovations, highlighting a powerful act of community support on a day of remembrance. As the nation reflects on the events of 9/11, Rebuilding Together Solano County organized this significant workday to honor those who served and to provide critical repairs for low-income veterans.

Hunter Blaine, who served in the Air Force nearly 40 years ago, expressed his gratitude, stating, “This seems unreal. It’s been amazing to see everyone doing what they are doing and doing it very well.” The renovations included a new paint job in “Nut Shell,” LED lights, and essential health and safety upgrades like smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors, with completion expected by the end of October.

The event marked the 45th workday organized by Rebuilding Together since its inception in 2009, a program that has repaired homes for over 32 veteran households in Solano County. Executive Director Elizabeth Hoffman emphasized the emotional weight of the day, stating, “It is very heartwarming that we can join together to make a lasting and visible difference for another veteran.”

The day was made even more poignant as it coincided with the anniversary of a national tragedy. Hunter Blaine recalled watching the twin towers fall on that fateful day, saying, “I remember thinking, ‘How can someone do something so horrible and despicable?’ It made no sense to me.”

Volunteers from Wells Fargo and Travis Air Force Base enthusiastically participated, with approximately 15 volunteers from Wells Fargo present on Thursday and an additional 40 volunteers scheduled for Friday and Saturday. Air Force veteran David LeRoy described the importance of giving back on such significant dates, stating, “Helping out is great anytime, but it gives the feeling of more significance on a day like today.”

The transformation of the Blaine home is part of a broader initiative by Rebuilding Together, which has served Solano County since June 2009. With more than 12,000 volunteers, the organization has provided crucial repairs to veterans, seniors, and disabled homeowners, focusing heavily on Vallejo due to its concentration of low-income veterans.

As the community rallies to support its veterans, the efforts of Rebuilding Together and its sponsors, including Home Depot and Cal Maritime Academy, demonstrate a collective commitment to ensuring that those who have served our country can live safely and with dignity in their homes.

This urgent community action not only enhances the quality of life for the Blaine family but also reinforces the bonds of support and gratitude for veterans throughout the region. As work continues on the Blaine residence and other homes in the area, the impact of these efforts will resonate far beyond the immediate repairs, fostering a spirit of solidarity and appreciation for those who have dedicated their lives to service.

Stay tuned for more updates as the work progresses and more veterans receive much-needed assistance.
