UPDATE: Tragically, Deng Mayar, a promising 22-year-old forward for the Omaha men’s basketball team, has died following a drowning incident on Saturday, October 14, 2023. Mayar was enjoying a day at the Blackridge Reservoir in Herriman, Utah, when he and a friend encountered difficulties in the water.
Authorities report that while Mayar’s friend managed to reach the shore, he heroically returned to assist Mayar, who was struggling to stay afloat. Unfortunately, Mayar went underwater and did not resurface. Rescue crews located his body late Saturday night. His friend was hospitalized but is expected to recover, according to Fox 13 in Salt Lake City.
In a heartfelt statement, Chris Crutchfield, head coach of the Omaha basketball program, expressed the deep sorrow felt by the team:
“Our entire program is devastated to learn of Deng’s passing. He was a joy to be around and made our culture better. We will miss him greatly.”
Mayar, who transferred to Omaha from North Dakota this offseason, was a notable athlete, having averaged 6.3 points and 4.0 rebounds during his last season at North Dakota. He concluded that season with an impressive performance, scoring 12 points and grabbing seven rebounds in a crucial win over South Dakota.
