UPDATE: The Oklahoma Department of Tourism and Recreation (OTRD) has just confirmed a significant agreement that allows Lookout Kitchen restaurants in state parks to reopen. This comes after a serious payment dispute that threatened to halt operations at all six locations.
On July 8, OTRD announced it was suspending restaurant operations due to Lookout Kitchen’s “repeated failures” to meet financial obligations. The department claimed Lookout Kitchen owed over $254,943.52 in overdue payments and $500,000 for a “letter of credit.” This situation emerged following the state’s removal of Swadley’s Foggy Bottom Kitchen, which is currently under investigation for alleged financial misconduct.
However, a breakthrough was achieved on July 14, when OTRD and Lookout Kitchen reached a conditional agreement to resume operations. The first location to reopen will be at Lake Murray State Park on July 15 at 8:00 AM, offering full breakfast service. Other locations, including those at Beavers Bend, Quartz Mountain, Robbers Cave, and Roman Nose state parks, will follow suit, reopening on July 19 at 11:00 AM.
Rep. Tammy Townley, the chair of the House committee on tourism, expressed optimism about the future of Lookout Kitchen, stating, “Everything is being done to ensure their success.” OTRD Executive Director Sterling Zearley echoed this sentiment, highlighting the importance of minimizing disruptions for park visitors.
The newly established payment plan requires Lookout Kitchen to fulfill monthly payments between July 28 and November 15 to clear a total outstanding balance of $274,585.88. Following the agreement, Lookout Kitchen made an initial payment of $65,000.
In a statement, Lookout Kitchen voiced their gratitude for reaching an agreement, emphasizing their commitment to the Oklahoma communities they serve. “We’re excited to resume operations and get back to what we love—serving great food and supporting our local parks,” said a spokesperson.
This reopening is not only crucial for park visitors but also for the local economy, as it brings jobs back to the area. Lookout Kitchen aims to provide the same level of hospitality and quality that patrons have come to expect.
As the situation develops, all eyes will be on Lookout Kitchen to ensure compliance with the new payment terms and to sustain operations moving forward. Visitors are encouraged to come out and celebrate the reopening of these beloved state park restaurants.
