Minersville High School Named Top 10 in PA for Breakfast Efforts!

BREAKING: Minersville High School has just been named one of the top ten schools in Pennsylvania for its outstanding breakfast program, significantly boosting student participation! With recent efforts, the number of students enjoying breakfast has surged from 90 to over 200 this year, a remarkable increase that underscores the importance of nutrition in education.

The school, located in Minersville, PA, implemented a new breakfast cart in the lobby, allowing students to grab quick meals as they head to class. This initiative is part of a campaign aimed at ensuring that students are well-fed and ready to learn. Superintendent Michael Maley stated, “Students who are hungry cannot properly focus on their studies,” highlighting the necessity of these meals for academic success.

In addition to grab-and-go options, the high school expanded its menu to include popular items like hot breakfast sandwiches, smoothies, scrambled eggs, waffles, and bacon and cheese tater tots. This expansion is a direct response to the Pennsylvania Governor’s Breakfast Challenge, which encourages schools to enhance breakfast participation while providing nutritious, sustainable food options.

Officials will honor Minersville High School and nine other districts at a ceremony at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia on September 25, 2025. This recognition serves as a testament to the school’s commitment to its students’ well-being and academic performance.

Maley emphasized the program’s importance not just for academic success but also for the physical health of students, many of whom participate in after-school activities and may not eat again until late at night. He noted that his own daughter benefits from the program, often saving food to eat between school and her extracurricular commitments.

The school has also made strides in promoting the breakfast program through social media, using platforms like Instagram to keep families informed about menu options. Food service director Jerry Naylon has played a crucial role in improving breakfast participation, creating a menu that balances student preferences with nutritional guidelines.

“Not all students have enough food at home,” Naylon said. “We encourage them to grab breakfast items each morning, even if they plan to eat them later.” This proactive approach aims to ensure that every student has access to nutritious meals, directly impacting their ability to learn effectively.

As the program continues to grow, its impact on student health and performance remains clear. Maley concluded, “Minersville has a proud tradition of always doing what is best for our students and families.” With continued support from the state for free meal programs, the district is committed to ensuring that all students are well-fed and ready to excel in their education.

Stay tuned for further updates as Minersville High School prepares to celebrate its remarkable achievement and commitment to student health!
