UPDATE: In an inspiring move for the Marshall community, Elmer Vargas, a dedicated barber and first-generation Mexican American, continues to elevate the art of hairstyling through his barbershop, Masterpiece, located at 302 N. Washington Ave. Just recently, Vargas emphasized the importance of mastering one’s craft, urging clients and fellow barbers to view their work as a personal masterpiece.
Vargas’s journey began five years ago when he started cutting hair for his son, who struggled to sit still during appointments. To calm him, Vargas researched haircutting techniques, leading to an unexpected passion. “I wanted him to have a decent haircut,” Vargas shared. After countless trials and a few mishaps, he honed his skills and soon began receiving requests from friends and family for haircuts.
In 2020, Vargas opened his first barbershop, moving to downtown Marshall in 2022 to better serve the community. The name Masterpiece reflects his commitment to quality. “Every haircut and service should be a masterpiece,” Vargas stated, emphasizing the philosophy he instills in his team.
Vargas’s connection to the term runs deep; he has also launched a clothing line under the same name. “The word masterpiece isn’t just for barbers—it’s for everything in the world,” he explained, showcasing his belief in the importance of passion and excellence in all endeavors.
His success and work ethic are rooted in the sacrifices made by his parents, who immigrated from Mexico seeking better opportunities. “I’m blessed because my parents took that risk,” Vargas said. His gratitude fuels his desire to uplift others in his community.
Community support has been vital for Vargas, especially during the early days of his career. “I was considering moving to a bigger town for more opportunities, but the connections I made here reminded me of my purpose,” he revealed. This realization has solidified his commitment to providing essential services locally.
Masterpiece Barbershop offers a range of services including haircuts, straight razor shaves, waxing, and hot towel treatments. The barbershop is open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday.
