UPDATE: A catastrophic landslide has devastated Tarasin Village in Sudan’s Central Darfur, claiming at least 1,000 lives on August 31, 2025. The Sudan Liberation Movement/Army (SLM-A) reports that the landslide, triggered by relentless rainfall, has “completely leveled the village to the ground,” with only one known survivor.
This disaster marks one of the deadliest natural catastrophes in Sudan’s recent history. The SLM-A’s urgent statement highlights the dire situation: “Initial information indicates the death of all village residents, estimated to be more than one thousand people.”
The humanitarian implications are staggering, as local authorities scramble to respond. Minni Minnawi, the governor of Darfur, has termed the event a “humanitarian tragedy,” calling for immediate assistance from the United Nations and international aid organizations to help recover bodies and provide relief to the survivors.
Access to the affected area is severely restricted, complicating rescue efforts and verification of casualty figures. The tragedy follows a series of climate-related events in the region, where many displaced residents had sought refuge after being forced from their homes by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces in North Darfur.
As the situation evolves, the international community is urged to respond rapidly. The SLM-A has issued a plea for urgent aid to address the immediate needs of survivors and to assist in recovery efforts.
This is a developing story. Stay tuned for updates as more information becomes available.
