UPDATE: The Denver Nuggets face a critical situation as point guard Jamal Murray sprained his right ankle during a tough 131-121 loss to the Dallas Mavericks on November 27, 2023. This injury raises concerns for the Nuggets, who are already struggling with their roster depth.
Murray sustained the injury early in the third quarter and initially managed to walk off the court. However, he returned to finish the period but was absent from the bench during the final 12 minutes of the game. Coach David Adelman confirmed that Murray will undergo evaluation on Tuesday.
“It’s a huge absence, obviously, offensively,” Adelman stated. “Jamal’s such a tough player. If he sits himself because of the pain, it probably hurts. I’m hoping he can come back for the next game.”
Prior to the injury, Murray was averaging a career-high 24 points per game this season. He finished the night with 10 points and 9 assists, a stark contrast to his usual performance level. Teammate Spencer Jones, who scored a career-high 28 points, noted the impact of losing Murray during critical moments. “Everybody knows the deadly pick-and-roll of Mal and Nikola Jokic. We definitely struggled,” Jones commented.
This isn’t the first injury blow the Nuggets have faced this season. Murray’s history includes a torn left ACL late in the 2020-21 season, followed by an impressive postseason in 2023, where he averaged 26.1 points and led the team to its first NBA championship.
If Murray is sidelined, he will join fellow starters Aaron Gordon and Christian Braun on the injured list. Gordon has been out since November 21 with a right hamstring injury and is not expected to return until late December or early January. Braun sprained his ankle on November 12 against the Clippers and is projected to miss at least six weeks.
Adelman acknowledged the difficulties posed by the absence of key players, stating, “I’m not going to come in here any night and sit down and talk about guys that are out. We have enough here to be more consistent defensively.”
As the Nuggets navigate this challenging period, fans will be watching closely for updates on Murray’s condition. The team’s next game is crucial as they look to reclaim momentum in the face of adversity.
