URGENT UPDATE: Workers at Horseshoe Casino Indianapolis have officially unionized, achieving a historic victory after a grueling 43-day strike. The casino’s workers, numbering around 200, successfully joined Teamsters Local 135, marking a significant milestone in their ongoing fight for better working conditions.
The unionization process faced considerable delays, originally slated for a vote on October 17. However, the timeline was disrupted due to a record-breaking 43-day U.S. government shutdown, which complicated the voting procedures. Workers became increasingly frustrated as Caesars Entertainment, the casino’s operator, resisted allowing a third-party auditor to oversee the vote. In response, the workers initiated a strike to pressure Caesars into recognizing their union.
Following the labor unrest, the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) intervened, ultimately overseeing the voting process. The results revealed overwhelming support for union representation, with the majority favoring the International Brotherhood of Teamsters.
Workers expressed their excitement and relief over the decision. Dakota Massman, a table games dealer, emphasized the empowerment the strike provided, stating it highlighted the collective strength of the workforce. Despite initial setbacks caused by Caesars’ opposition, Massman celebrated the victory as a testament to their resolve.
In a statement, Dustin Roach, president of Teamsters Local 135, criticized Caesars for its handling of the situation but lauded the workers for their determination. He vowed to channel that same fighting spirit into negotiations for their first labor contract.
Furthermore, Tommy Blitsch, director of the Teamsters Convention, Trade Show, and Casino Division, praised the workers’ perseverance, calling it “nothing short of inspiring.” He reiterated that the union’s stance was clear from the outset: the strike would only conclude with Teamsters representation.
This victory not only signifies a win for the Horseshoe Casino workers but also sets a precedent for labor movements across the nation. As Teamsters Local 135 represents around 12,000 employees across various sectors, their commitment to fighting for better pay, tip pooling, and enhanced job security is likely to resonate throughout the industry.
With the union now established, workers at Horseshoe Casino Indianapolis are poised to negotiate their first contract, promising to advocate fiercely for their rights and benefits. Stay tuned for further updates as this developing story unfolds.
