Historic Dunbar School Demolition Set to Begin in Lawton

The historic Dunbar School in Lawton, Oklahoma, is on the verge of demolition due to extensive disrepair and hazardous materials. Once a cornerstone of the community, the building is scheduled to be torn down as preparations are underway by the contractor appointed by the City Council.

Constructed in 1937, the Dunbar School served as a predominantly Black educational institution until its closure in 1974. Over the decades, the building has fallen into disrepair, suffering from shattered windows and the presence of asbestos. These issues have made the structure unsafe and uninhabitable, prompting the decision to proceed with demolition.

Contract Awarded for Demolition

In late February, the Lawton City Council awarded a contract worth $120,510 to Total Demolition Services LLC based in Oklahoma City. City officials confirmed last week that the contractor is preparing to initiate the demolition process. This includes obtaining the necessary permits and removing utility meters from the site.

As the preparations continue, city officials are keen to ensure that the demolition proceeds smoothly and safely. The site, located on the 1700 block of Southwest Douglas Avenue, has been a significant part of the neighborhood’s history, and the decision to demolish it reflects broader community concerns about urban development and preservation.

Community Impact and Legacy

The closure of the Dunbar School in 1974 marked the end of an era for many residents who attended the institution. For decades, it provided education and a sense of community for families in Lawton. The impending demolition has elicited mixed reactions, as some locals express sadness over the loss of a historical landmark, while others recognize the necessity of addressing safety concerns.

As the city moves forward, discussions surrounding the future use of the site continue. Community leaders are eager to explore options that honor the legacy of the Dunbar School while addressing the needs of the current population.

The demolition process is anticipated to begin soon, with city officials emphasizing the importance of safety and compliance throughout the project. As Lawton prepares to say goodbye to the Dunbar School, the community reflects on its historical significance and the impact it has had on generations of students.
