URGENT UPDATE: A devastating fire has destroyed the historic Grand Canyon Lodge, the only accommodation on the North Rim of Grand Canyon National Park. The White Sage Fire, sparked by lightning on July 9, has rapidly expanded, engulfing tens of thousands of acres and critical structures within the park.
Authorities have confirmed that while there have been no reported injuries, the fire’s impact is profound. The Grand Canyon Lodge, designed in 1927, was a beloved destination for hikers and adventurers visiting the North Rim. Built from Ponderosa pine logs, the lodge was a significant piece of the park’s heritage, having welcomed visitors for nearly a century.
Firefighters faced dangerous conditions as they fought the blaze overnight. Aerial resources were utilized to slow the fire’s progression near the lodge, but complications arose due to a chlorine gas leak at a nearby water treatment facility, forcing evacuations of personnel from critical zones.
The fire has also obliterated numerous structures, including a gas station, a wastewater treatment plant, and over 50 cabins used for guest and staff housing. The urgency of the situation escalated on July 12, when the fire raged uncontrollably through the park, prompting immediate action from the National Park Service (NPS).
Former NPS Chief Historian Robert K. Sutton expressed his deep sorrow over the loss, stating, “It’s tragic, it really is.” He emphasized the immeasurable value of the lodge and its significance to the park’s history. Arizona Governor Katie Hobbs also voiced her condolences, remarking, “I am incredibly saddened by the destruction of the historic Grand Canyon Lodge.”
Aramark, the company managing the lodge, assured that all employees and guests were safely evacuated and joined in mourning the loss of this iconic structure. The original lodge was similarly lost to fire in 1936 but was rebuilt and preserved with salvaged stonework, highlighting its historical importance.
As the wildfire continues to burn, officials urge visitors to stay informed about park conditions and safety protocols. The community and park lovers alike are left to grapple with the loss of a cherished landmark.
Stay tuned for further updates on this developing story as firefighters and officials work tirelessly to contain the blaze and assess the full extent of the damage.
