UPDATE: Disney is facing a public relations crisis as it announces major price hikes for Disney+ just as the controversy surrounding ABC’s suspension of Jimmy Kimmel Live! intensifies. Starting in 30 days, new subscription rates will take effect, raising eyebrows among subscribers already frustrated by recent events.
The decision to suspend Kimmel’s show over remarks about the assassination of Charlie Kirk drew significant backlash from Hollywood and free-speech advocates. Following an outcry, ABC reinstated the show, set to air again tonight, but the damage appears to be done. Subscribers are expressing their discontent with a viral movement urging fans to cancel their Disney+ subscriptions.
In a bid to regain public favor, Disney released a trailer for the upcoming Star Wars film, The Mandalorian and Grogu, one of its biggest hits on Disney+. However, the trailer failed to quell critics, with many pointing out that it showcased a visually underwhelming film heavily reliant on nostalgia and fan-favorite Baby Yoda moments. This contrasts sharply with the excitement generated by Star Wars: Starfighter, which featured Ryan Gosling in a character reveal just hours before the Kimmel suspension.
Compounding the situation, Disney+ subscribers will soon see their monthly bills increase. The price for the Disney+ and Hulu Bundle with ads will rise from $11 to $13. The no-ads option will remain unchanged at $20. Disney+ Premium with no ads will jump from $16 to $19, while the Hulu Premium no-ads subscription stays at $19. Moreover, the Disney+ with ads plan will increase from $10 to $12, and Hulu + Live TV (with ads) will rise from $83 to $90.
These price hikes follow a trend in the streaming industry, with Disney+ having raised its rates previously and competitors like Apple TV+ announcing similar increases. However, the current climate sees a unique situation as widespread boycotts against streaming services are rare. The question remains whether those who canceled their subscriptions in protest over Kimmel’s suspension will be willing to pay more to return.
As the clock ticks down to the new pricing, Disney is at a crossroads, facing the challenge of mending its relationship with subscribers while navigating a turbulent media landscape. Will the reinstatement of Kimmel’s show be enough to quell the discontent, or will the price hikes push more viewers away?
